In this video I explain what Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is, it's causes, symptoms and pathology. I will also show you a quick quiz to help you identify if this is the problem that you are struggling with, because knowing what the problem is, is the first step to sorting it out.
OCD is an anxiety disorder that has two essential features:
1. Recurrent or persistent thoughts, usually about something bad happening to us or someone else, along with a sense that we have responsibility for this.
2. Rituals or routinised behaviours that are intended to stop the harm occurring.
We all overthink or ruminated from time to time, especially when we are stressed. We all also have little routines or rituals that comfort us. OCD is a step beyond this. Trying to stop the thoughts makes them worse, trying to resist the rituals lead to increasingly unbearable levels of anxiety that are only relieved by carrying out the routine.
The term OCD is not used correctly in relation to eating, drinking or gambling as these things involve some pleasure whilst you are doing them, it is usually only the aftermath that hurts. The burden of OCD is that there is no pleasure in it, only the short relief from anxiety that comes immediately after the ritual have been done.

I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories.
