About BarBer 88
Located in Shinmachi, Tsu City, Mie, BarBer 88 is a long-established, owner-run Japanese barbershop created by master barber Yoshio Fujibayashi, known to many viewers simply as "Dora." Originally from Iga — the famous ninja town — Dora has been barbering for close to three decades and founded BarBer 88 over 25 years ago. Far from a standard, clinical barbershop, the interior was designed in the fashion of the rock music he grew up loving, as a place that feels like a stop on a journey: part train station, part bookstore, where you pause, relax, and leave refreshed for your next stop.
Why It's a Place Worth Visiting
A Barbershop Built Around Rock Music: Dora grew up on British punk and 90s grunge, especially Nirvana, and that youth subculture shaped the whole shop. The cozy waiting area is lined with shelves of books, vintage cameras, and a typewriter — you will even spot books with Kurt Cobain on the cover. It feels personal and lived-in, not like any chain barbershop.
The Full Classic Japanese Barber Course: This is traditional Japanese barbering done properly — a precise haircut and styling, hair wash, a close, careful shave, ear cleaning, and a relaxing head and shoulder massage, all performed by the owner himself. It is the complete, unhurried service that classic neighbourhood barbershops in Japan are known for.
A Master Barber With Decades of Experience: With nearly 30 years behind the chair, Dora brings the kind of quiet confidence and attention to detail that only comes from a lifetime in one craft. He does not speak English, but as he puts it, he will make the visit worthwhile — visitors travel to Tsu specifically to sit in his chair.
