1 Key for 90 Minutes: Sleepy Purring Synth Drone | ASMR | Relaxation | Sleep

I finally figured out how to incorporate a synthesizer into the channel more frequently, aside from the ASMRP ("Arkham Sanitarium Music Relaxation Program", which I haven't forgotten about!). This was supposed to be called "1 Key for 1 Hour" but I lost track of time after awhile (I would have sat there for countless eons if it weren't for the inferior limitations of the human body).

Any kind of repetitive sound that drones on and on, whether it's the wind in the trees, a crackling fire, ocean waves, rain, the constant hum of a long car/train/bus ride, static white noise, or in this case: one repeating synthesizer sound (via hardware or software), creates the perfect ambience and atmosphere for falling asleep.

For this first entry in this new periodic series, I created a simple pulsing, purring, drone-like sound for anyone looking to relax, sleep, etc. I play with (i.e. modulate) the sound slightly a few times throughout the video (if you're curious how I did it, please see under the timestamps below). This may not be your textbook drone sound since they usually are a constant tone without much change in timbre. Next episode I'll do just that. I also added some theatrics and hammed it up a bit to have some fun.

Lastly, I could have easily used the "latch" function of this particular synthesizer model and let the synth play the sound without having to hold any keys down, but that would have ruined the whole joke and purpose of the video!

For those interested, here's how I created the sound: there are 3 oscillators at work, each one tied to their own LFO. The oscillators were detuned as far as they could go to distort their original wave sound and create the purring effect. The LFO's also cycle at slow fixed rates with their phases slightly shifted so that all 3 oscillator sounds can be heard and never overlap as time progresses. The main pulse sound is a Sine wave tied to an LFO which modulates the Sine wave's volume, thus creating the "pulse". Then there's some additional modulation via this particular synth model's "Mod Matrix", such as altering the pitch up & down of an oscillator's wave ever so slightly. That's really it. Pretty basic and minimalist, just like me!
