ASMR Politics Chat, SAVE Act + NDAA - Why Bills Get Snuck Into Other Bills
There’s a political tactic where lawmakers attach an unpopular or unrelated provision to a bill that has to pass, like defense funding, so the other party either has to accept it or take the blame for voting no. This just happened twice in one week with the SAVE Act getting attached to the National Defense Authorization Act and a separate bill about banning members of Congress from trading stocks. I talk through how this works, why it’s not new or one sided, and a similar example from 2009 when Democrats did the same thing with a different bill. Most people don’t follow day to day legislation closely enough to notice when this happens, so I wanted to break down what it actually means and how often both parties use it.
