The family’s Kitadoko Barbershop, 喜多床五代目 舩越千代, had an incredible history dating all the way back to 1871 ✨
That same year, the Japanese government allowed men of status to stop wearing the traditional topknot and no longer carry swords. Sixty percent of Tokyo’s male population no longer wore their hair in the traditional style by 1876.
The original Kitadoko Barbershop was located across the street from what is now the University of Tokyo 📚 The shop became very well known and grew to 18 chairs and a staff of 20.
Over the years, the shop moved several times. When we first filmed there, it was located downstairs in a modern building.
In 1990, Ms. Chiyo began working alongside her father and became the first woman in the family to run the business. Even into his 80s, her father continued coming to the shop every week. He's retired now and doing well 😊
Although Kitadoko Barbershop has sadly closed, Ms. Chiyo has continued working at Cut Studio SHOU in Shibuya 💇🏻♂️ where we recently had the chance to visit and film with her again!
Ms. Chiyo still can’t believe that so many people found our original video with her interesting! Since the video was published on YouTube, she said many people came to visit her 🎉
