It sits at the crossroads of three plateaus—the Tibetan, Loess, and Inner Mongolian—and contains almost every landscape except the ocean: grasslands, deserts, snow mountains, and the famous Hexi Corridor. This is where the Silk Road ran its busiest stretch, home to the Mogao Caves (the world's largest Buddhist art sanctuary) and Jiayuguan Pass (the western end of the Great Wall).
