First Punic War (264–241 BCE):
The primary cause was a dispute over control of Sicily.
The war began with a series of naval battles, as both Rome and Carthage sought dominance in the western Mediterranean.
Rome ultimately prevailed, and Carthage ceded Sicily to Rome in the Treaty of Lutatius.
Second Punic War (218–201 BCE):
This war is most famously associated with the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca, who crossed the Alps with his army and won several significant battles in Italy.
Hannibal's victories included the Battle of Cannae in 216 BCE, one of the most famous tactical masterpieces in military history.
Despite his successes in Italy, Hannibal couldn't defeat Rome decisively.
The Roman general Scipio Africanus eventually defeated Hannibal at the Battle of Zama in 202 BCE, ending the war.
The Treaty of Zama resulted in Carthage losing its overseas territories and paying heavy reparations to Rome.
Third Punic War (149–146 BCE):
The Romans, fearing a resurgence of Carthaginian power, besieged and destroyed Carthage.
The city was completely destroyed in 146 BCE, and the territory became a Roman province called Africa.
