🇺🇸 The Last Free Place in America - Slab City | Salvation Mountain & East Jesus
We kicked off our 2019 USA Road Trip with a visit to Slab City, also known as the last free place in America, to visit Salvation Mountain and East Jesus. Both attractions are popular for tourists and great for photography.
Salvation Mountain goes back to the mid "80s and is the work of Leonard Knight. For over twenty years, Leonard worked on this tribute to his faith. His message is, "God Is Love."
East Jesus was established in 2007 by Charlie Russell who was friends with lots of artists and people from the Burning Man community. He passed away in 2011 and the residents who were left wanted to make sure the area was preserved. So a non profit was formed to "preserve his vision of an ever-changing art installation."
In the winter months Slab City is a booming metropolis of snowbirds. During summer, when temperatures can easily exceed 100 degrees, only the full-time residents remain to greet the adventurous spirited such as us!
It was definitely hot when we visited! 😊
