In this video I describe 6 techniques to help your child cope with back to school anxiety.
1. Feeling worried or anxious about going back to school is normal and nature’s way of preparing us for the challenge of doing something that we haven’t done for a while. This is the first technique, helping your child to understand that it is normal to feel worried and in fact everyone is going to feel the same on the first day back at school, all of their friends and their teachers too.
2. Waiting for something you don’t want to do, to happen, is the worst bit, so find ways to distract your child in the last few days and hours before they have to go back to school. I will describe some ideas in this video.
3. Prepare your child for how they might feel and explain why this is the case, again, I will describe some ways to do this in the video. This will make their feelings seem more manageable.
4. Motivate your child to go back to school by scattering treats through the day, this will give them a tangible benefit for doing something they’d rather not do.
5. Be available for your child in case they need you, ideas on how to do this are explained in the video. This will make them feel more secure.
6. Deal with your own negative feelings so that your child doesn’t pick up on them.
