Tonight, we begin Ireland’s forgotten Odyssey: The Voyage of Máel Dúin, one of the most extraordinary voyage tales in Irish mythology.

Settle in for soft-spoken ASMR storytelling in a gentle Irish accent as we travel back to an older Ireland of warriors, druids, prophecies and mysterious western seas.

In Part One: The Voyage Begins, we discover the strange and tragic circumstances surrounding Máel Dúin’s birth, the hidden truth of his ancestry, the murder of his father and the desire for vengeance that draws him towards the ocean.

Guided by the instructions of the druid Nuca, Máel Dúin prepares a skin-covered boat and gathers seventeen companions for the voyage. But when three beloved foster-brothers refuse to be left behind, one carefully delivered warning is broken, and the little vessel is carried beyond every familiar shore.

Over the coming episodes, we will follow Máel Dúin across a dreamlike sea filled with impossible islands, enormous creatures, strange communities, beautiful Otherworld landscapes and dangers unlike anything found upon the ordinary maps of Ireland.

This is Episode One of a seven-part ASMR storytelling series, with a new chapter continuing the voyage each night.

About the story and sources:
The Voyage of Máel Dúin, known in Irish as Immram Maele Dúin, is a medieval Irish voyage tale preserved through several manuscript witnesses and scholarly editions.

This video is an original, expanded ASMR retelling based on the events of the medieval narrative and informed by editions and translations associated with Whitley Stokes and H. P. A. Oskamp. It is not a direct reading of any modern translation. The dialogue, descriptions, transitions and atmospheric passages have been newly written for this series.
