In this video I describe 5 ways to deal with grief and loss.
Grief is a process that unfortunately we cannot skip, it is natures way of helping us to adapt to a loss and a new reality. For more about this process see my video on how to know is you need grief counselling https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-rniBjYr0c.
However, there are a few simple things that you can do to ease your way along this painful path:
1. Set aside some time once a day to think about the person that you have lost. This will help you to process what has happened and work out a way to live without the person that you have lost. It will also go someway to contain your feelings of sadness making them feel a little more manageable.
2. Create routines and tasks that give you a sense of pleasure and achievement. This will focus your mind on the present and highlight what the world still has to offer.
3. Remember that what other people say and do around your is tangled up with their experiences and beliefs about grief and loss. This is your personal and individual journey, not theirs.
4. Look for support in the right places and when it is no longer available, move on. Get professional help if you can’t find it anywhere else.
5. Don’t rush yourself. Grief needs time.

If you have any questions then please post your comments below and I will do my best to help.

I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
