Commentary

In classical mythology, Cupid is the Roman god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection, also known by the name Eros in Greece. He is often portrayed as the son of the love goddess Venus and the god of war Mars. Cupid has been portrayed as a chubby boy since the Hellenistic period, since then he has gained his iconography, a bow and arrow, that represent his source of power: a person, or even a diety who is shot by Cupid’s arrow is filled with uncontrollable desire.

Cupid is winged, allegedly because lovers are flighty and likely to change their minds, and boyish because love is irrational. His symbols are the arrow and the torch, because love wounds and inflames the heart, as said by Isidore of Seville in 636 CE. Cupid is also depicted as blindfolded and blind, as described by Shakespeare in A Midsummer Night’s Dream: “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind and therefore in winged Cupid painted blind. Nor hath love’s mind of any judgement taste; wings and no eyes figure unheedy haste. And therefore is love said to be a child because in choice he is so oft beguiled.” Particularly in ancient Roman art, cupid may also carry or be surrounded by fruits, animals, or attributes of the seasons, symbolizing the earth’s generative capacity.

Cupid carries two kinds of arrows, or darts, one with a sharp golden point, and the other with a blunt tip of lead. A person wounded by the golden arrow is filled with uncontrollable desire, but the one struck by the lead feels aversion and desires only to flee. The Latin poet Ovid describes these arrows in action when Apollo taunts Cupid as the lesser archer. Cupid shoots him with a golden arrow, but the object of his desire, the nymph Daphne, with the lead. Trapped by unwanted advances from Apollo, she prays to her father, the river god, who turns her into a laurel, a tree sacred to Apollo.

In medieval times, mythographers interpreted myths for Christian use more morally. In this view, Cupid is seen as a demon of fornication. He was viewed as a seductive but malicious figure who exploits desire to draw people into an allegorical underworld of vice. His quiver symbolized the depraved mind, his bow trickery, his arrows poison, and his torch burning passion. He was portrayed naked to emphasize his deception and evil, and this conception followed his attachments to lust. This was diluted over the years as many Christians embraced Cupid as a symbolic representation of love instead.

Because of Cupid’s association with love, 19th century Victorians - credited with popularizing Valentines Day and giving the holiday its romantic spin - began depicting this version of Cupid on Valentine’s Day cards in a trend that has persisted until this day.
