The Thing Behind the Door ( ASMR )

Restless and unable to sleep with a myriad of thoughts on your mind (you know the ones: where is the remote? when is grandma coming to visit and bring her famous Burokėlių Sriuba? why is the next door neighbor screaming at the top of their lungs? does the universe really reside on the back of a turtle? etc.etc.) you decide it's a right jolly good time to take a relaxing stroll through the ever-winding halls of good ol' Arkham Sanitarium.

A left here, a right there, another left, down the rusty chute and scraping your back against some of the loose bolts, a rolling cartwheel past the Plague Ward, crawling past the Death Ray Vending Machine which just so happens to be out of your favorite candy (which reminds you: where has the Candy Man been these days anyway?), down 8 flights of stairs, past the A.S.M.R. Session Chambers, through the 3rd rift on your right, a shortcut through the snow-laden hedge maze, a double layout with a half twist over the molten lava, elevator through the glass ceiling, a jump to the left and a step to the right, and you seem to have stumbled upon a strange part of the Sanitarium you don't ever recall having visited before.

Here in this mysterious part of the facility, you find yourself at a mysterious door which seems to warrant the utmost in caution. Maybe it's the mysterious signs plastered over its mysterious surface warning of something mysterious that lay beyond? Maybe it's the way the mysterious curtains have been pulled back, as if someone or something mysterious is expecting you? Maybe it's a slight bout of indigestion from the mysterious squid that you ate at lunch in the cafeteria? Whatever mysterious thing it may be, and believe you me there is definitely something mysterious going on, you can't help but feel the urge to throw caution to the wind and step a little closer. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but the early bird catches the worm!

As you slowly approach the foreboding door (somewhat against your own will I might add, as if a million invisible ethergnomes are pulling on tiny little magical golden nylon ropes tethered to your very soul) you are greeted by the gibberings of a strange yet benevolent creature. Is this another one of the professor's experiments gone awry? Is that Deep One Dave trying to pull one of his silly little pranks again? Do you really need more questions on top of the ones you are already trying to rid your mind of at this hour!?

As the creature moves about to and fro, bringing you familiar objects from its possession, you can hear the rattling and scraping of chains against the cold cement floor of its apparent domicile. You employ herculean efforts to resist the urge to ask any further questions as your mind tries to ascertain the full scope of the situation that you find yourself in. One thing is for certain: for whatever reason the creature is being held behind this door, its shackles will not allow it beyond the threshold.

After awhile, as the creature continues to enchant you with its ordinary baubles, you begin to feel yourself getting more and more sleepy by the minute. You can't help but to ask one final question: are you already fast asleep, and this is just another one of your bouts of sleepwalking? Maybe you ought to make an appointment with one of the staff members and have a nice little chat about this in the A.M. Perhaps. But not now. Now, it is time for some much needed R&R...

What is ASMR? It is both a sensation and a medium.

ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response and is the current, non-scientific name given to the feeling characterized as a pleasurable tingling sensation felt in the head, scalp, back and other regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and/or cognitive stimuli, such as crinkling bags, hand movements, whispering, personal attention or watching someone perform a task. It's like goosebumps, but much more pleasant.

ASMR videos are meant to intentionally help induce this sensation, also referred to as "tingles", but also provide a relaxing, calming, soothing, therapeutic and even entertaining experience for the viewer.

Many people who do not experience ASMR still enjoy the videos for their calming and sleepy effect.
