Description: Roanoke Island was the site of the 16th-century Roanoke Colony, the first English colony in the New World. It was located in what was then called Virginia, named in honor of England's ruling monarch and "Virgin Queen", Elizabeth I.
From 1584 to 1590 there were six expeditions to the area and two groups of colonists who attempted to establish a colony there, both groups failed when expected supplies never reached the island in time. It's thought that the abandoned colony dispearsed into the nearby frontier to be assimilated into the local Hatteras, Croatoan, Roanaoke tribes, and their way of life due to a carving in a tree of the single word "CROATOAN" and interpretted to mean this was their destination. But nothing was ever confirmed.
From then on, it was known as the "Lost Colony."
As always, I want to seriously thank you for all your warm support.
