A Gift

Ephemeral Rift
Published 10 years ago

On this particular day I had set out with all of my recording equipment to film in the local woodlands. After a 30 minute commute and another 30 minute hike, I arrived at my destination. I opened my backpack to retrieve the camcorder that I use only to find out that I didn't pack it and left it at home. Luckily I had my GoPro. I then proceeded to take out my audio recorder only to find out I had about 5 minutes left of battery and left the spares at home. As I stood there in the creek, waves of anger and despair began to crash against the shore of my mind. All of a sudden, to my right, just at the edge of my peripheral vision, something fell into my field of view. As I looked down, I saw this insect, one that I never saw before in my entire life. A katydid of a species I have yet to ever see, and yet to research online to find out it's species. Needless to say, the waves subsided and calm waters returned and the journey wasn't a complete failure after all. I may have only ended up with this footage, but it's yet another Happy Accident that I will never forget.
