What Happens In The First Counselling Session?

In this video I will explain what happens in the first counselling session. It can be pretty daunting starting therapy so knowing what to expect can really help to make you feel less nervous.
The point of the first counselling session is for the therapist to understand your particular version of the problem so that they can individually tailor the therapy to what you need. They will have seen other people with your problem but if they are going to properly help you they will need to know what your specific experience of that problem is. So, your therapist will need to ask you some questions about the severity of your symptoms, how they developed and if you have experienced any other types of similar problems in the past, some general questions about your life, family, friend and work and what type of treatments you have tried so far.
Once they have all of this information they will use it to explain why you are experiencing these problems and then how they plan to help you to resolve them. In this first counselling session you will also have plenty of time to ask questions and express any worries that you have.

If you have any questions then please post your comments below and I will do my best to help.

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
