Introducing El Bar Bero - San Juan Puerto Rico's barbershop themed cocktail bar! Interview and tour of El Bar Bero with owner Carlos Rivera.
Carlos established El Bar Bero around 10 years ago by turning a once abandoned salon/barbershop into a cocktail bar now known for its vintage barbershop themed drinks and atmosphere.
The shop had been abandoned for about a decade and Carlos says, “I saw the opportunity to get the space.” He adds, “When I was looking for a name for the bar, I remembered that there were barbers here and beauticians, so I wanted to pay a little bit of a tribute to something that lasted so long in the area.”
According to Carlos, El Bar Bero is a place that has something for everyone - from grandparents to college students and everybody in-between.
In this video, Carlos shares some of the bars vintage collectibles and one of many cocktails created for the bar using local ingredients.
We are treated to the "Ron del Barrilito Smoked Old Fashioned." This cocktail features Puerto Rico’s oldest rum, Ron del Barrilito, star anise, mole bitters, homemade demerara syrup, freshly grated raw cocoa from the island and is topped with a flamed orange peel. This drink is unique as Carlos has woodchips from one of Barrilito’s aging barrels which are lit on fire and used to smoke the glass before adding the other ingredients - ensuring a smooth, smoky taste.
