In today’s video, we’re taking a closer look at the tragic Verrückt water slide accident at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kansas.
Verrückt — German for “crazy” or “insane” — was once promoted as one of the tallest and most extreme water slides in the world. Standing approximately 168 feet tall, the ride was designed to send riders down a massive drop and then back up a steep hill at extremely high speeds.
But behind the record-breaking attraction were serious engineering and safety concerns. During testing, rafts reportedly became airborne, and the ride was eventually fitted with overhead netting to prevent riders from leaving the slide. Despite these warning signs and reports of injuries, the ride opened to the public.
On August 7, 2016, 10-year-old Caleb Schwab was killed while riding Verrückt. The two other passengers in his raft were seriously injured but survived.
