Choosing your mental health professional

In this video I explain how to find a good therapist. Deciding to have therapy can be a difficult decision, finding a good therapist can sometimes be as hard. This is because this area is broadly unregulated.

There are many organisations that therapists and counsellors can join but few regulate practice. Most just require you to pay a monthly subscription so membership does not reflect a therapists level of expertise, training or whether they are keeping up to date with recent developments in psychology and therapy.

Therapy with a counsellor or therapist who is not properly trained can create more problems than it solves and a significant proportion of the referrals we receive at The British CBT & Counselling Service are from people who have had therapy with a therapist who was not properly trained and as a result they are now in a worse state than they were before.

So finding a good therapist is incredibly important. Probably the most important thing is that the therapist is a member of a professional body that regulates their practice. In the UK this is The Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). Membership of this body means that the therapist has a recognised qualification and that they are continually updating their skills through training and supervision to ensure that they are offering the most up to date and effective therapy treatments.

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
