First African nation to gain independence: Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast, was the first African country to gain independence from colonial rule. On March 6, 1957, Ghana became a sovereign nation under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah.

The name Ghana: Ghana is named after the ancient Ghana Empire, which was located in what is now southeastern Mauritania and western Mali. The name "Ghana" means "warrior king" in the Soninke language.
