ASMR - What is Occupational Therapy? (Educational ASMR)

At the time of video recording I was still considering pursuing my career in Occupational Therapy. I think this was recorded around three weeks ago - in this short period of time A LOT has happened and I have decided to change courses. There are a lot of factors contributing to my decision to change, and maybe someday in the future I shall go into them.
I hope this was interesting to you! In general people seem not to know much about Occupational Therapy, which I deem strange as they do help a significant percentage of the population. In fact many people are seen by professionals at hospitals without know that they are Occupational Therapists!

Occupational therapists strive to treat the person as a whole instead of just their impairments from a physical perspective (St. Catherine University Online OTA 2017). So you can see how different this is from a purely physiological viewpoint on the human experience.

The World Federation of Occupational Therapy gives this definition (2012) "Occupational therapy is a client-centred health profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by working with people and communities to enhance their ability to engage in the occupations they want to, need to, or are expected to do, or by modifying the occupation or the environment to better support their occupational engagement". When you are looking academically at definitions, this is likely one of the most frequent that you will find.

The American Occupational Therapy Association (inc) offers a differing yet similar definition (date unknown) "Your life is made up of occupations—meaningful everyday activities. These occupations can include many
roles, such as being a parent, a friend, a spouse, a tennis player, an artist, a cook, or a musician. We generally don’t think about our daily occupations until we have trouble doing them. Everyone has occupations—
from the toddler whose occupations are play and learning to develop important skills, to the older adult
whose occupations are engaging with family and friends and managing his or her home. If you are recovering from an accident or injury, your valued occupations may be disrupted. Occupational therapy
incorporates your valued occupations into the rehabilitation process".

I hope this all can give you a slightly better understanding of what Occupational Therapy is!

Thanks for watching the video, y'all are absolutely lovely and I am thoroughly enjoying making videos for all'a'yaaallll. Hope you get some PHAT ASMR or tingles or relaxation, or a reprieve - or something doodly at least.

What does ASMR Mean?
Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), sometimes auto sensory meridian response, is a tingling sensation that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. A pleasant form of paresthesia, it has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia and may overlap with frisson.

ASMR signifies the subjective experience of "low-grade euphoria" characterized by "a combination of positive feelings and a distinct static-like tingling sensation on the skin". It is most commonly triggered by specific auditory or visual stimuli, and less commonly by intentional attention control. A genre of videos which intend to stimulate ASMR has emerged, of which over 13 million are published on YouTube
(Wikipedia, 2020).

Its basically a tingly and relaxed feeling you get, caused by certain cues we call in the community 'triggers'.
