Whenever food became scarce during the medieval period, it became a delicacy. Medieval folks would gather up as much honeycomb as possible, and put it in a container for safekeeping. They would then snack on honeycomb as part of their regular meal plan. Once they had enough honeycomb to eat, they would stop collecting honey from their hives. As you can see, eating honeycomb was a way for medieval folks to endure their hard times.

The first use of honeycomb was to store honey. Today, we still use honeycomb in this way; storing honey in a Bee hive is called capping. However, ancient Greeks and Romans used honeycomb as a geometric design element in their architecture. They would place ornate golden cubes at the tops of their church steeples. At first glance these golden cubes might remind you of an abundance of honeycomb— hence the name “honey-skew” handpicked by medieval beekeepers for their precious product.

Eating honeycomb is a common ASMR trigger. This is because many people enjoy the crunching sounds it makes when consumed in moderation. Snacking on honeycomb also helps people build up their daily calorie intake. In addition, there are some medical conditions that can be alleviated by eating honeycomb— the most common being diabetes. In addition to helping with diabetes, eating honeycomb has many other health benefits as well. These include lowering cholesterol levels and promoting healthy skin and hair growth.

Honeycomb is rich in fructose-glucose and nectin-6-beta glucoside— a naturally occurring sugar derived from honeycomb. In fact, there is a medical condition called type 6 diabetes that can be relieved by eating nectin-6-beta glucoside derived from honeycomb. There is also a narcotic drug known as β-hyrodropynrolone that comes from crystallized honeycomb. Apparently, early European herbalists used this drug to treat coughs and colds, fever, mild pain and toothaches. Without question, the medical benefits from eating honeycomb are numerous and varied.

The concept of storing food in honeycomb dates back to prehistoric times, and the eating of honeycomb has a long list of positive health effects for the body and mind alike. Over time, this sweet treat has helped countless people with their medical issues— and it can do so again now that we’ve discovered its medicinal properties!
