In this video I am going to share 5 tips to help you to settle your child at nursery and manage separation anxiety.
Starting nursery is a rite of passage for you and your child (possibly more for you than your child!) and like any transition it has the potential to be stressful. However, it doesn’t have to be. The tips that I will share with you in this video will help you to navigate this process with relatively little stress and anxiety. I will go into more detail in the video but here are the highlights.
1. Separation anxiety is normal
Nature has designed children to response in this way, it is a survival technique, it is not a sign that something is wrong.
2. Your attitude is important
Your confidence in No1 is going to make this process far less stressful. Build this by talking to other parents but don’t compare your experience negatively with other, there is no standard for settling a child at nursery. Also identify your issues about this change so that you are free and clear to deal with what is in front of you.
3. Don’t catastrophise
We have a tendency to predict the worst when we are under pressure, try to make an accurate prediction of what is going to happen based on facts not feelings.
4. Be realistic
Even when your child is settled in nursery there will still be days when they don’t want to go, this is normal
5. Get support from your nursery
