PTSD After Childbirth - What is Birth Trauma?

In this video I am going to explain what Birth Trauma is, then I am going to take you through a quick quiz to help you to work out if this is the problem that you are struggling with, because knowing what the problem is is the first step to getting help and feeling better.
Birth Trauma occurs when the birth of a baby is experienced by the parent(s) as traumatic and leads to one or both developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a result. Birth Trauma affects 30,000 women in the UK which is somewhere between 25-35% of women. Birth Trauma also affects men, so in this video I will refer to the sufferer as the as ‘the parent’.
The risk factors for Birth Trauma include:
1. A difficult, long, painful labour
2. Unplanned C-section
3. Emergency Treatment
4. History of Depression
5. History of Anxiety
6. Low Self Esteem/Confidence
Birth Trauma is often underestimated because getting a baby at the end of it is assumed to be adequate compensation for the experience and the joy of parenthood is thought to help people quickly forget what they have been through.

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
