In this video I am going to explain what treatment for Birth Trauma involves.
Birth Trauma is a problem that affects 25-35% of women in the UK. It effects men also. For more information on Birth Trauma, take a look at my video “What is Birth Trauma”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ff3b2zZKNc
There are 2 types of treatment that are thought to be effective for Birth Trauma. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprogramming (EMDR). In the video I will explain what each of these involves, but here are the highlights.
1. CBT: This involves between 5-15 sessions (depending on the severity of symptoms) 1-1 with a therapist. The therapist will help you to process and readjust to your birth trauma in 2 ways:
i) By changing the way that you think about the trauma, which can keep your mind closely connected to it, as if it had just happened or is still happening.
ii) By helping you to overcome avoidance of reminders of the trauma, a coping strategy which stops the process of readjustment.
2. EMDR: This too involves between 5-15 sessions (depending on the severity of symptoms) 1-1 with a therapist. Here the therapist guides you to make rhythmic movements with your eyes whilst recalling the trauma. The eye movements are thought to stimulate the information processing systems in the brain which allows the processing of and readjustment to the trauma.

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
