Disclaimer: this video was a ‘NOVEL’ (pun intended) way to shed light on the importance of pandemics and precautionary measures to ensure you and loved ones aren’t unnecessarily affected by this novel Coronavirus

What is coronavirus?

The current virus is a type of the Coronavirus family. It’s a large family of viruses, some cause illness in humans, some in animals. Human coronaviruses typically cause a mild illness like the common cold. However, caution must be taken early as they can cause serious disease especially in elderly and children, also they can evolve with mutations to become more dangerous
Examples of others in the family are SARS and MERS.

This novel coronavirus (specifically called 2019-nCoV) is a new strain/type in this family which has not been previously identified in humans, hence ‘novel’

What is 2019 novel coronavirus?

This is the new coronavirus currently facing the world in a Pandemic, with MOST cases affecting people in mainland

It is important to take hygiene precautions (such as consistent hand washing with soap, and mask wearing, ideally) in order to prevent transmission or contagion as there is evidence that 2019-nCoV can spread from person to person. There have been cases of 2019-nCoV reported in several Asian and other countries including Australia. The situation is evolving rapidly.

What are the known symptoms?
Most case-patients have had:
-fever
-coughing
-shortness of breath
-maybe pneumonia in later stages or successively people.

The incubation period (time between exposure and onset of symptoms) ranges between two and 14 days according to current estimates.

How is it spread?

Human to human transmission via droplets caused by sneezing or coughing. A mask with a filter/ventilator should be worn for max protection.

Am I at risk???🦠😵
If you have travelled to China in the past few months, be diligent.

If you have come into contact with someone sick, especially confirmed cases, you should inform health authorities such as your local GP by Phone and minimise all contact with others.

People with underlying illnesses that make them more vulnerable to respiratory disease, including those with diabetes, chronic lung disease, pre-existing kidney failure, people with suppressed immune systems and the elderly may be at a higher risk.

How is it prevented?

It’s likely that general prevention measures used for other coronavirus infections will also prevent infection with 2019-nCoV.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends measures to reduce the general risk of acute respiratory infections while travelling in or from affected areas by:
* avoiding close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections;
* frequent hand-washing, especially after direct contact with ill people or their environment;
* avoiding close contact with live or dead farm or wild animals;
* people with symptoms of acute respiratory infection should practice cough etiquette (keep away from other people, cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing, and wash hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds).
*
What should I do if I have returned from affected areas or have been in contact with a patient with coronavirus in the last 14 days?

If you develop a fever, a cough, sore throat or shortness of breath within 14 days of travel to an affected area or have had contact with a person with confirmed coronavirus, you should immediately isolate yourself from other people. Contact your GP or your emergency department by phone or via minimal exposure with a mask on to minimise spread. Please protect others.

When seeking medical care wear a surgical mask (if available) otherwise ask for one when you arrive.
