So Shiatsu Direct on the skin?
Now i know for a fact 99% of the shiatsu community will be totally against this as traditionally speaking shiatsu is done fully clothed.
I worked fully clothed 90% of the time unless i want to include soft tissue or cupping work. However i don't actually agree that shiatsu has to be done fully clothed, we was taught the reason we don't work direct on the skin.
1. The skin distracts the mind.
2. Traditionally the Japanese are modest.
3. Helps maintain the dignity of our clients.
4.traditional way to work.
And yes i agree 100% its great for the dignity of our clients especially when we begin to add in stretches and some people just dont feel comfortable undressing and would prefer body work done fully clothed.
However it the first 2 beliefs that i believe are incorrect, Firstly that the skin distracts the mind this is not my experience now i dont claim to be some sort of master in fact i make no claims other than its more down to the client if you feel energy when working.
Sometimes i work and i cant say i feel the energy within the session, then other times there is buzzing, popping, energy is flowing into me between me and the client and its super powerful.
Now this can happen when working direct on skin, sometimes ill be doing some soft tissue work and ill blend in shiatsu and energy i feel is electric. In contrast i can be working over clothing and feel nothing.... so for me it just doesnt stack up.
2. Japanese are modest.....Really simply not true, not from my experience or my research.

And lastly number 4, tradition..... Now hold your horses shiatsu isnt that old the word was first used around the early 1900's some debate over the exact date. However shiatsu has evolved from many touch based therapies.
In fact one of the stories we are told that shiatsu evolved from a blind mans practise of healing where they would touch, squeeze, stretch and re-balance a persons energy back to health.
Recently a client of mine shared a book with me in which these blind men are described on doctors travels around the world the book was written in the 1850's.
It describes the blind Japanese healers as "manipulators", who pinch, squeeze and press every part of a persons body in an attempt to heal them. It also points out the patients are completely naked.

Id also like to add that since shiatsu moved to the west it has continually evolved into many forms which wouldn't be recognised by traditionally Japanese schools. But id argue shiatsu isnt about the way you perform it but about shiatsu been in you been a part of you. in order to do shiatsu you have to be shiatsu.
