About a year ago, this client’s previously lightened hair became darker after at-home coloring. We later performed one lightening session to help remove the dark artificial pigment. With that color history in mind, today’s focus was brighter root color and gray coverage, blended naturally into her existing lengths.
I applied color to the gray areas first, then adjusted the formula and application across the regrowth to work toward the brightness she wanted while respecting her hair’s condition.
🧪 My Own Formula Language
One head of hair can hold several different color histories. I consider the gray percentage, previous pigment, porosity, and desired brightness when choosing my formulas and application sequence.
💡 Pro Tip for Hairstylists
A lighter permanent color does not reliably lift previously deposited dark artificial pigment. Color correction may require controlled pigment removal or lightening after strand testing.
If dark patches remain, targeted correction may be needed. Where the hair lacks underlying warmth or density, selective pre-pigmentation can help prevent a hollow-looking result before the final toner or shade is applied. The aim is balanced, even-looking color—not simply more bleach.
