In this video I am going to explain the main causes of Post Natal Depression (PND).
There is no single cause for Post Natal Depression (PND) instead there are a number of risk factors.
1. Biological origins of Post Natal Depression (PND)
The biological origins of Post Natal Depression (PND) remain unclear despite a significant amount of research in this area and findings are contradictory.

2. Previous Mental Health Problems
Having a baby represents a significant life changes which can be destabilising and result in previous unresolved issues coming to the surface which can lead to Post Natal Depression (PND).

3. Low Self-Esteem
Low self-esteem leads us to underestimate ourselves, criticise ourselves and compare ourselves negatively to others. All of these things leave us vulnerable to developing Post Natal Depression (PND).

4. Over Investment in work
A work/life imbalance is a risk factor for Post Natal Depression (PND).

5. Poor Body Image
The physical changes that occur when we have a baby can be challenges if we have poor body image and can leave us vulnerable to developing Post Natal Depression (PND).

6. Expectations of Motherhood
Having a baby and becoming a parent is never what we expect and this discrepancy between our hopes and reality can be a risk factor for Post Natal Depression (PND).

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
