How to Deal with Depression

In this video I will look at the 2 most effective treatments for Depression, medication and therapy. Both medication and therapy are legitimate treatments for Depression but both have advantages and disadvantage so in this video I help you to understand these so you can choose which treatment will suit you the best. At the end of the video I will also share my recommendations.

There are a number of different medications for Depression all falling under the heading 'Antidepressants'. However, because the biological origins of Depression are still not fully understood, despite a lot of research, finding a medication that works for everyone is difficult. This means that prescribing the right antidepressant medication at the right dose involves quite a lot of trial and error. Antidepressants also have a number of side effects and do not resolve the cause of depressive symptoms so once treatments ends your Depression is likely to return. Antidepressants do however work much more quickly than therapy.

The psychological origins of Depression are clearer which means developing an effective talking therapy is relatively easy. Currently research suggests that the most effective talking therapy is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) takes a little longer to work than medication but as it resolves the underlying cause of Depression symptoms are less likely to return once treatment is over.

If you have any questions then please post your comments below and I will do my best to help.

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
