Commentary

A hellhound is a mythological dog that embodies a servant of hell, the devil or the underworld. A wide variety of ominous hellish hounds appear in mythology across the globe, with the best known examples being Cerberus, a multi headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld to prevent the dead from leaving; from greek mythology, Garmr, a dog associated with Hel and Ragnorok described as a blood stained guardian of Hel’s gate; from Norse mythology, the black dogs of English folklore, and the fairy hounds of Celtic Mythology. The hellhound has been seen several times throughout history and is not specific to any one place.

Descriptions of what these puppers from hell look like vary. But the most common characteristics are that they are black, abnormally overgrown, supernaturally strong, have red eyes, sharp teeth and can be accompanied by flames, and smell of burning brimstone.

According to myths and legends, a hellhound is not only considered a bad omen, it has actually helped people throughout history. They are said to warn people of danger and protect them when needed. They are loyal to the people who call upon them and are said to be very watchful. Aside from that, they are considered to be omens of death, guardians and gatekeepers. They are called the bearers of death because they were supposedly created by ancient demons to serve as heralds of death. Apparently, seeing one leads to your death. Others reports state you have to see it multiple times for anything to happen, but regardless they are a feared symbol of bad things to come. They are assigned to guard entrances of the world of the dead like graveyards and burial grounds. They are often seen as helper dogs for those who are about to pass, and can also show up to said loved ones to inform them of a death.

They have made several appearances in pop culture. I first heard of hellhounds from supernatural, where they are sent to earth to drag the soul of the damned to hell. They’ve appeared in Buffy the vampire slayer, teen wolf, the x-files where it guards the gates of the underworld, they’ve showed up in the 1984 Ghostbusters and the film hellboy. The two Pokemon Houndour and Houndoom are based off the hellhound, and they also appear in the Witcher and DnD, among other sources
