Hi sweets💓 Welcome back to another episode of Exploring the Paranormal! Today we're looking into Japanese folklore and exploring a character known as the Ushi-Oni. I hope you enjoy the video, and if you have any suggestions please lmk in the comments!

Commentary
Today we’ll be looking at Japanese folklore and talking a little bit about the Ushi-oni. The name translates to “ox demon”, and these beasts make their homes near water.

Their appearance varies from location to location, but the general consensus is that they have the head of an ox with sharp upward-curving horns, wicked fangs, and a slender tongue. Their body is depicted as spider-like, with 6 legs and long singular claws at the end of each. They spit poison and enjoy killing and eating humans. Some are lurkers, attacking people who draw too close to their lairs; others are hunters who roam their area looking for prey; some even ravage the same towns over and over again bringing diseases and curses with them.

Other descriptions state the Ushi-oni as having the head of an ox and the body of an oni (an ogre or a troll), while others have this depiction reversed with the head of an ogre and the body of an ox.

They are said to appear in beaches, mountains, forests, rivers, swamps and in lakes. They often frequent stream pools, and in the Kansai region as well as in Shikoku.

There are different legends in different areas, here are a few:
- The Ushi-oni stream pool in Nishimuro District connects to the sea at its bottom, and when the water gets dirty, people would say that the Ushi-oni is there. Just encountering this demon results in catching an illness. You can save your life by saying opposites like rocks flow, leaves sink, horses bellow and oxen neigh. The ushi-oni here has a catlike body with a long tail, and they have springy bodies making them undetectable when moving.
- There is an ushi-oni at the waterfall basin in Wado River and the people who have their shadows licked by one would catch a high fever and die in a few days. To avoid this, one can provide the beasts some alcohol (their favourite thing lol so relatable and quirky) every year at New Years.
- There is a well known ushi-oni that is a massive, brutal sea-monster which lives off the coast of Shimane Prefecture and other places in Western Japan and attacks fishermen. This beast is depicted as having a spider or crab-like body.
- When night fishing in Kumihama Bay of Kyoto, a voice is heard by fishermen beckoning them from the opposite shore. The fishermen go there just to find no one. They hear the voice from the original shore and go back to it only to find no one. They chased the voice for a while and when they returned to their boat all the fish had been taken.

In Anan, Tokushima prefecture, a family called Kajima has enshrined a beast’s skull told to have come from an ushi-oni. It is said that the Kajima family’s ancestor’s slew this ushi-oni upon request from local farmers who were the victims of it’s torment.

In Kurume, Fukuoka prefecture, there’s a mummified hand at the Kan’onji said to be an ushi-oni’s hand. The beast appeared in 1063 in Kohei and tormented the nearby residents with its supernatural powers. It is said that warriors hesitated to slay it but the head priest slew it in the end.

These creatures appear in the Warei festival that takes place in late July, and have also made several appearances in pop culture.
- One Piece and Naruto are just a couple of media representations of the ushi-oni
