Relationship Workshop #5: How To Stop Arguing

This is the 5th video in my relationship workshop The Key to a Healthy Relationship. In this video I am going to share with you the 5th key which is How to Stop Arguing.
The first thing to say is that nobody agrees all the time and when this happens in a relationship it is usually because one person is dominating the other, so only that person is getting their needs met. Disagreements are necessary for relationships to grow, deepen and to adapt to changing demands. For ‘disagreement discussions’ to be productive there are 6 rules that must be followed. I will go in to more detail in the video but here are the highlights.
1. Pick a mutually convenient time to talk
2. Stop when emotions get too strong
3. Stay on topic
4. Take it in turn to speak
5. Don’t try and resolve things all in one go
6. Record your discussion to improve your technique

In the next video I will be looking at how damaging it can be to compare yourself and your relationship to others. Thank you for watching, I hope it is helpful.

If you have any questions then please post your comments below and I will do my best to help.

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
