Relationship Workshop #6 Stop Negative Comparisons

This is the 6th and final video in my relationship workshop, The Key to a Healthy Relationship. In this video I am going to talk about the 6th key which is negative comparisons, particularly with other people’s relationships, and how toxic they can be.
Nature has programme us to compare ourselves with others. This serves an important survival function for human beings, designed to motivate us to improve our performance. However, sometimes this tendency is triggered when we are feeling bad about ourselves, self-critical, full of self-doubt and low confidence and so serves no helpful function. Instead it becomes a stick we can beat ourselves with. So take negative comparisons with other people’s relationship as a sign that you are feeling bad rather than an indication of the health of our relationship. Even if it is your relationship that is making you feel bad, it is not an accurate or helpful focus.
Interestingly, when we are happy we do not think about other people but are instead content to inhabit own worlds and our attention is less likely to be drawn outside.
In the video I will show you 4 steps to help you stop negative comparisons with other relationships so that you can use the energy you save for yourself.

If you have any questions then please post your comments below and I will do my best to help.

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
