Relationship Workshop #4: Impact of the Past

This is the 4th video in my relationships workshop, The Keys To A Healthy Relationship. In this video I am going to look at how our past relationships impact on our current ones and how we can temper this influence.
As human beings we struggle to stay in the present moment. This is because our ancestors were physically safer if they were constantly reviewing the past in order to predict future risk. Evolution is a slow process which means that we retain many of our ancestors coping strategies, despite the fact that the risks we face in the modern world are very different.
This means that our current relationships and interactions are heavily influenced by our past ones, especially those early ones, the ones with our parents. This is particularly the case when these interactions are intense because the intensity of the emotion opens the door to similar experiences from the past that come in and flood what is currently happening, influencing how we think, feel and response to what is going on right now.
In this video I will explain how to temper the influence of these past experiences and stop heated discussions disintegrating into arguments. I hope it is helpful, thank you for watching.

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
