Hair Straightening: The Care Behind Every Silky Finish | Part 2

Three women. Three different hair stories. One commitment: to care for each woman as thoughtfully as I care for her hair.

Today, I am straightening three very different heads of hair: severely damaged hair, healthy hair, and damaged hair. Each woman deserves her own approach. Each section deserves to be understood.

A straightening appointment is also an act of trust.

A woman walks into a salon, settles into the chair, and places something personal in someone else’s hands. She gives her time, her money, and her hope. A visit may take three to five hours—often around four. Behind her quiet expression may be a simple wish: “I hope my hair will feel beautiful when I leave.”

I believe a hairstylist should recognize that feeling.

That is why I have spent so much time studying, analyzing, and recording how hair responds. I wanted to offer my clients beautiful hair and the comfort of knowing that every step has been considered.

Over 27 years behind the chair, I have developed my own formula language: a record of mixing ratios, section-specific choices, and the responses that guide my work.

Think of it as a personal recipe collection.

A thoughtful cook understands the ingredients before choosing a recipe. A thoughtful hairstylist learns to read the hair before choosing a formula. No two clients bring exactly the same ingredients. Even on one head, the roots, mid-lengths, and ends can tell three different stories.

The back may have greater resistance. The hair around the face or crown may need a gentler approach. New growth and previously treated lengths may require different formulas, different timing, and different levels of protection.

Pro tip for fellow hairstylists: build your own recipe by learning to read each section.

Choose the formula’s pH and mixing ratio according to the condition, treatment history, and response of the hair in front of you. For damaged hair with distinct needs at the roots, mid-lengths, and ends, I plan my application in three stages, giving each zone its own care.

A strand test helps me check that plan before proceeding. Those observations guide my adjustments, including when working with bleached hair that testing shows is suitable for straightening.

My recipes, strand tests, and section-by-section checks are the safeguards behind my calm hands. They help me make informed decisions and work with greater confidence.

That calm has been built through years of learning.

To everyone watching: the silky finish you see begins with the careful attention you may never see. It begins with understanding your hair—and understanding how much this appointment means to you.

Three women. Three individual recipes. The same heartfelt wish.

That each woman leaves my salon with soft, beautifully flowing hair, a lighter heart, and a smile she carries through the door.

I am Rhea, a hairstylist with 27 years of experience. Over five years, I have shared approximately 11,500 videos across YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, filming, editing, and uploading them myself.

Every video is a page in that journey. Every client gives me another reason to keep learning.
