In this video I am going to explain what Bipolar Disorder (previously known as Manic Depression) is and also a little bit about the causes and its treatment.
I will go into more detail in the video but here are the highlights.
Bipolar Disorder effects someone mood and results in them experiencing extremes swings between episodes of depression and mania with sufferers often never having any balance in their mood at all. The course of Bipolar Disorder varies widely with some sufferers vacillating frequently between episodes of depression and mania and others only ever experiencing 1 episode of mania.
Bipolar Disorder occur in approximately 1 % of the populations and rarely occurs for the first time in people over the age of 40 years.
The biological origins of Bipolar Disorder are unclear but it is thoughts that early experiences that effect the way someone thinks about themselves and the world can increase someone’s risk of developing the problems.
In terms of treatment, both medication and psychological therapy have been found to be effective in helping sufferers to manage their symptoms.
