How To Cope With Exam Stress

In this video I am going to share some tips for dealing with exam stress. These are for children and young people who are about to sit an exam and parents looking for ways to support their children.
The first thing to remember is that anxiety and stress are normal and necessary when we are facing a situation in which we must perform. These emotions motivate us to prepare for whatever we must do and then enhance our performance on the day so that we can do our best. However, too much anxiety and stress can lead to distress and discomfort and can hinder our performance. The tips that I will share in this video will help you to keep your anxiety at a level where it can help you and where it feels manageable and tolerable.
Here are the highlights:
1. Balance academic achievement with happiness
2. Prepare sooner rather than later, this is a much more effective way to learn and retain information
3. Revise and relax in equal measure
4. Don’t Catastrophise
5. Get help from school, this is not the first time they have done this
6. For Parents, be confident in your child’s ability to do their best and that together you can deal with whatever happens.

If you have any questions then please post your comments below and I will do my best to help.

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
