How To Know If You Need Grief Counselling

In this video I am going to explain how to know if you need grief counselling by describing what is normal and healthy when you experience a bereavement and the signs that you might need professional help.

Grief is a natural and necessary process that we must all go through when someone we love dies. However, it is painful beyond words and sometimes we need more support than our friends and family can give us.

There are five stages of grief, all of which you will experience when someone dies. These stages will enable you to survive your loss, process it and move forward from it. You will not experience these one after the other but will flip between them often within a single day. This is normal, healthy and eventually this will bring you to a place of peace where you can move forward with your life without the pain that you are currently experiencing.
The five stages of grief are as follow:
Denial: a way of surviving the reality of what has happened in the early day of a bereavement.
Anger: a way of feeling more in control of your feelings
Bargaining: a way of remaining in the past
Depression: in order to begin to reconfigure your life without your loved one in it
Acceptance: a place where you are able to find meaning and purpose in your life again

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
